El Ignaciano / Diciembre 2024
EDITORIAL

After a life full of commitment to Christian and patriotic values, two great men have left us, Joaquín Pérez and Juan Manuel Salvat; they went to the Father's House on November 22 and 26, respectively. Both were linked to the “Instituto Jesuita Pedro Arrupe” and “El Ignaciano”: Joaquín was director for many years of the IJPA and from that position, mentor of our magazine; el “Gordo” Salvat promoted the birth of El Ignaciano and was its first editor. Our condolences to their respective wives, children and other family members.
We dedicate this edition to them, which we have headed with Despedida a Joaquín (Farewell to Joaquín), a letter from his son Julián, and a brief biographical sketch of Juan Manuel Salvat by Javier Figueroa.

With the celebration of the Second Session of the Synodal Assembly last October and the elections in November, we culminated another stage of the synodal process in the Church and the political process in the U.S., respectively; both events are discussed in this last edition of El Ignaciano 2024.
However, our attention will mainly be focused on two topics that we will continue to develop thoughout the coming year: the Jubilee 2025 and the 50th anniversary of the convocation of the 32nd General Congregation of the Society of Jesus, which gathered the thought of Fr. Pedro Arrupe, S.J., whose beatification process began on February 5 of 2019.
Alfredo Romagosa comments on the Final Document “For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, Mission” of the XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, Second Session, October 2024, under the title “The Synodal Journey of 2024”, with abundant quotations from the aforementioned document, which was approved by Pope Francis by sending it to be published without any modification, and is available at the following Internet link: https://www.synod.va/en/news/final-document-of-the-xvi-assembly.html
With the title “A ‘further reception of the Second Vatican Council’: the emergence of a new figure of the Church throughout the synodal process”, Rafael Luciani and Agenor Brighenti offer us a detailed analysis of “the ecclesiology of the People of God at the level of the whole Church”, arising from the Second Vatican Council but only developed during the synodal process 2021-2024.
THE 2024 ELECTIONS IN THE U.S.
Americans have democratically expressed their will, as they always have, in the recent general election. We hope that the aggressive rhetoric against political opponents - calling them “the enemy”- and the misinformation that unfortunately characterized the election campaign will be left behind. We hope that now, instead of deepening the marked polarization of society, the various political forces at all levels of government and citizen participation through civil society will work together to restore dialogue and democratic consensus, not following the agenda dictated by some extremist ideology, by particular or personal interests, but for the Christian and civic values of the dignity of all people and the common good in areas of vital importance such as food, health, housing, education, labor, the climate crisis, immigration, finance, as well as in trade and international relations.
Mario J. Pardes writes about the “bittersweet” taste that may have been left by the recent electoral process in the USA, calling on us to combat polarization and restore the unity of all in a nation whose motto is “E pluribus unum”, which title we have given to his article, published originally in Religión Digital and which we have included in our section DE OTRAS FUENTES.
In his article “Teología política: Johann Baptist Metz, Gustavo Gutiérrez, papa Francisco y su pre-historia - Breve reflexión (Political Theology: Johann Baptist Metz, Gustavo Gutiérrez, Pope Francis and his pre-history - Brief Reflection), Sixto García explains what this branch of Theology is, its origins and development from the Old Testament to the present day.

Fr. ARRUPE AND THE 32ND GENERAL CONGREGATION AND ITS IMPACT ON THE COMPANY OF JESUS
On the occasion of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the convocation of the 32nd General Congregation of the Society of Jesus on December 2nd, which reflected the thinking of the then Superior General, Fr. Pedro Arrupe, S.J., and because of the celebration on February 5, 2025, of the 6th anniversary of the inauguration of the process of his beatification, we are dedicating this and next year's editions to these topics. Fr. Arrupe and the General Congregation 32 marked a turning point in the history of the Jesuits, above all by the proclamation that faith in God must be inseparably linked to the tireless struggle to abolish injustice in all spheres of human activity.
Instituto Jesuita Pedro Arrupe (IJPA) has programmed a conference under the title “Pedro Arrupe, S.J.: profeta de la justicia” (Pedro Arrupe: Prophet of Justice) to take place on Saturday February 8, 2025, at Casa Manresa, Miami, FL, according to the program announced in this edition.
Alfredo Romagosa, writes on this subject in an article entitled “Pedro Arrupe: un ‘hombre para los demás’.” (“Pedro Arrupe: a ‘man for others’”), providing biographical data and his performance as General of the Society of Jesus.
For our part, El Ignaciano has asked several Jesuits for their answers to these two questions:
- What do you think was the greatest impact on the Society of Jesus of Father Arrupe's thought, developed in General Congregation No. 32 50 years ago?
- Do you feel that it has influenced your vocation, in what way and how does it manifest itself in your activity as a Jesuit priest?
We publish in this edition the responses of two Jesuits belonging to different generations and who exercise their ministry in different activities.
Manuel Maza, S.J., has answered our questions at length in his article “Un jesuita entre el Padre Arrupe y la Congregación General 32” (A Jesuit between Father Arrupe and the 32nd General Congregation), tinged with historical data, according to his profession as a historian.
“Cómo la CG 32 y el padre Arrupe han marcado mi vocación” (How GC 32 and Father Arrupe have marked my vocation) is the title that Emilio Travieso, S.J., has given to his article in response to our questions, with details of his vocation and his personal witness as a Jesuit.
CARE OF “THE COMMON HOME”
On the occasion of the recent United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) and the G20 intergovernmental group meeting, the following are some of the key events that will take place in the coming months, Gelasia Márquez y Antonio Sowers write about the climate change issue discussed at both events, under the title “Two global organizations and a common concern”, and at the same time they refer to the Study Program “Wait and Act with Creation” that takes place at the Pedro Arrupe Jesuit Institute of the Center of Ignatian Spirituality in Miami.
It has been 800 years since St. Francis of Assisi wrote his “Canticle of the Creatures”, which Helio Gonzalez includes in a second article about the saint: “San Francisco de Asís, hombre de fe extraordinaria y alma de niño” (St. Francis of Assisi, a man of extraordinary faith and the soul of a child). In it, he tells us of the saint's special relationship with all creatures, to the point of including some animals in the staging of the birth of Jesus in the Bethlehem portal that he performed in his time, and which has become a custom of popular religiosity every Christmas.
DOCUMENTS
We offer you the Bull “Spes non confundit” (Hope does not disappoint) with which Pope Francis has proclaimed the celebration of Jubilee 2025, theme to which next year's editions will be devoted
Gustavo Gutiérrez, OP, died on October 22 in Lima, Peru, at the age of 96. Many have considered him to be “the father” of Liberation Theology, which took up the spirit of Vatican II and proclaimed “the preferential option for the poor.” Pope Francis, in a message delivered at his funeral, referred to him as “A great man. A man of the Church” ...“he knew how to be silent when it was necessary to be silent; he knew how to suffer when he had to suffer.”
On October 24, the Vatican made public Pope Francis' fourth encyclical, Dilexit nos (He Loved Us), a lengthy treatise -sprinkled with quotations and poetry- “on human and divine love” in the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which develops its links with theology, the Gospels, tradition, Ignatian spirituality and the missionary dimension of the Church as stated in its conclusion: “I ask the Lord Jesus Christ that from his holy Heart may flow for all of us those rivers of living water that heal the wounds we inflict on ourselves, that strengthen our capacity to love and serve, that impel us to learn to walk together towards a just, supportive and fraternal world”. The text can be found at: www.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/encyclicals/documents/20241024-enciclica-dilexit-nos.html
In solidarity with our Puerto Rican brothers and sisters, we copy the words of a communiqué from Archbishop Gonzalez of San Juan in response to a shameful allusion to his island during the recent election campaign, in which he stated: “Puerto Rico is not a floating island of garbage. Puerto Rico is a beautiful country inhabited by very noble and precious people”, and he also recalled that “more Puerto Rican soldiers died in the Vietnam War in the U.S. Army than soldiers from any U.S. state”. We also want to express our solidarity with the Haitian immigrants falsely accused of stealing and eating pets (cats and dogs) in a town in Ohio, in another unfortunate episode of the electoral campaign.
Finally, we pray that the Jubilee Year 2025 will truly be a year of hope for humanity, especially for those peoples who are in the midst of wars (declared or undeclared), and to you, dear readers, we wish you many blessings this Christmas.
