E D I T O R I A L

«Consecration of the United States of America to the Sacred Heart of Jesus by the U.S.

«Pope Leo XIV’s message to the United States on its 250th anniversary» (Mensaje del Papa León XIV a EE.

EDITORIAL

It is with great sadness that we must announce that Dr. Sixto García, who was an editor and regular contributor to this magazine, passed away last Saturday, August 22. We extend our condolences to Elena, his widow, his children, and the rest of his family, confident that he is now resting in the Father’s House. In “IN MEMORIAM”, Alfredo Romagosa offers us a heartfelt tribute to his fruitful and inspiring life through his shared experiences, particularly at the Pedro Arrupe Jesuit Institute, in an essay titled “Sixto García, ‘Teólogo en Residencia’” (Sixto García, ‘Theologian in Residence’.)

                 …………………………………………………………………………………………

The Social Teaching of the Church remains a central theme of El Ignaciano, and, as promised in our previous issue, in this one we focus on the encyclical Magnifica humanitas, issued by Leo XIV on May 15 on the protection of the human person in the age of artificial intelligence, the promotion of truth, the dignity of work, social justice, and peace. The following articles reflect on various aspects of the encyclical.

Artificial Intelligence and Humanizing Work” is the title of Alfredo Romagosa’s article, in which he analyzes the topic of work and labor relations addressed in the encyclical, beginning with the concept of artificial intelligence (AI), covering its benefits and dangers in the workplace, citing an example of a government measure to protect workers from it, and with numerous references to previous encyclicals on the subject.

In an article titled “Reflexiones sobre la inteligencia artificial, la educación y la encíclica Magnifica humanitas” (Reflections on Artificial Intelligence, Education, and the Encyclical “Magnifica humanitas”), Carlos Azcoitia writes about the relationship between AI and education, highlighting the challenges it presents and the need for discernment regarding its potential application in the field of education.

Under the title “The Unfinished Question Mark: A Human Response to the Age of AI”, Jorge Rodríguez argues that technological advances—artificial intelligence in particular—leave open the question of how to manage them appropriately for the ultimate good of humanity, in a process of continuous discernment, open to a future that is still unfolding.

In our “FROM OTHER SOURCES” section, we feature an article by Antonio Spadaro, S.J., published in Global Catholic on May 25, whose title speaks for itself: “Magnifica Humanitas: A Comprehensive Reading.

To mark the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence, our DOCUMENTS section features these two:

Consecration of the United States of America to the Sacred Heart of Jesus by the U.S. UU.” on June 11, 2026, as part of the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the U.S.

Pope Leo XIV’s message to the United States on its 250th anniversary” on July 3, 2026.

In our FROM OTHER SOURCES section, we reproduce an article by José M. Vidal published in Religión Digital on June 24 under the title “The Forbidden Pulpit: Rome Silences Laypeople at Mass,” which concerns a decision by the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments that would hinder the growth of lay participation in the Church.

In the section CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME, we have included “Environmental Wins and Loses,” highlighting significant events related to human intervention and government policies that affect—either positively or negatively—the environmental well-being, by Enrique Rodríguez.

During his recent visit to Spain, Leo XIV spoke about the important role of POPULAR RELIGIOSITY. On this topic, we include in FROM OTHER SOURCES the article “Francis of Assisi and Our Present,” by Saverio Corradino and Giancarlo Pani, published on June 12, 2026, in La Civiltà Cattolica, on the 800th anniversary -next October- of the “blessed passing” of St. Francis of Assisi, one of the most popular saints, whose image we often see among the plants in home gardens.

In FUE NOTICIA / IT WAS NEWS, we collect “news” items—which were news during the previous quarter—related to the life of the Church and events related to its presence in the world, as they appeared in various media outlets.

“El Ignaciano” is sponsoring an essay contest on topics related to the “Catholic Social Teaching”. Essay Contest / Concurso de ensayo” has all the information about it.

We would like to conclude by expressing our solidarity with the people of Venezuela and Colombia, who have been shaken by earthquakes in their respective countries, and offering a prayer for the victims who lost their lives, for their families, for those who have lost their homes and other possessions, as well as for the actions of their leaders and international solidarity that will enable their swift recovery.

OUR OPINION

The 250th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence should have been an opportunity to promote national unity in the face of prevailing political polarization. However, President Trump turned this July 4th into a celebration of himself and his policies, in a speech in which he highlighted the achievements of the past 250 years and painted an optimistic picture of the country’s future, while attacking his political enemies.

In contrast, in his remarks upon accepting the Liberty Medal from the National Constitutional Center in Philadelphia on July 3, Leon XIV said:

I join you in asking God’s blessings upon America’s future, that the lofty ideals enshrined at the beginning of the Declaration of Independence may continue to guide the flourishing of the nation in unity, justice and peace… It is my hope that this tradition will continue to bear fruit in a public discourse marked by moderation, respect for the views of others and an ongoing effort to find common ground in promoting the cause of peace and reconciliation, at home and abroad.

The immigration policy currently in place in the U.S. continues to result in arrests, deportations, and mistreatment, which in the last quarter has led to several deaths of immigrants at the hands of ICE agents—due to unjustified violence at the time of their arrest or a lack of medical care in detention centers, where they live in inhumane conditions.

At the same time, TPS status has been arbitrarily revoked for beneficiaries from several countries facing serious political or humanitarian crises, as is the case with Haitian immigrants.

León XIV recently spoke out on the issue of migration: During Mass on the island of Lampedusa, Pope Leo XIV condemns the brutal treatment of migrants and refugees, urging the world to concretely and compassionately respond to the "enormity of suffering."

For its part, The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Migration, said in a press statement that the T.P.S. revocation of Haitians represented “a moral crisis when returning them to their country of origin is not a safe or reasonable option.”

Cuba has been suffering for some time from an energy crisis as the electricity supply has been interrupted by frequent breakdowns of electric plants due to poor management characterized by lack of maintenance and new investments.  Electric rationing was imposed which resulted in extensive blackouts leaving the population in darkness for many hours at a time and sometimes without water too. Electric plants function with fuel oil and Cuba does not produce enough of the needed oil to operate the plants and need to rely on oil imports.

3

As part of its efforts to produce a government change in Cuba, the United State governments started imposing sanctions on exports of oil products to Cuba in January of this year.  The oil sanctions were very effective as countries that exported oil to Cuba were threatened with the imposition of import tariffs and oil tankers destined to Cuba were blocked.  Sanctions were lifted partially for US oil exports destined to Cuba’s private sector, but sanctions imposed on the Cuban electric company in June prohibited the rental of its oil storage capacity by private firms, effectively blocking the use of oil tankers for oil destined to the private sector. All in all, the US oil sanctions have aggravated the energy crisis increasing the suffering of the population and paralyzing other sectors of the economy.

We are in favor of a change in the Cuban political regime which for decades has been violating the rights of its people and impoverishing the country. However, the end does not justify the means and the US sanctions on exports of oil products cannot be justified due to the additional suffering imposed on the Cuban people. The oil sanctions cross the line of respecting the human rights of the Cuban people.

Finally, with regard to wars of various kinds currently ravaging several regions of the world, we endorse the recent statements made by Leo XIV in Pavia: “Enough with hate speech, enough with insults and harassment—enough with all those things that sow discord among people, among communities, and among countries. We must all learn to be builders of peace and promoters of reconciliation.”
