Responding to questions asked by journalists following the Mass on the Memorial of Saint Monica, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Parolin expresses hopes in echoing Pope Leo's appeal that a “collective punishment” in the Middle East would be avoided, and that a ceasefire and “safe access” to humanitarian aid would be achieved; “Many interests are preventing a solution to the Gaza tragedy.”
In a private audience with Pope Leo XIV, Rafael Luciani—a lay theologian and director of the Biblical-Pastoral Theological Center (CEBITEPAL) of the Latin American and Caribbean Episcopal Council (CELAM)—presented the Pan-American Synodal Ecosystem project, Together, organized by CELAM. From today Eeditorial: For several years now, the Holy See has formally recognized the State of Palestine, and we cannot remain silent in the face of what is happening. Once again we make Pope Leo XIV’s words our own, asking that the barbarity of war be stopped, that a peaceful solution to the conflict be reached, that humanitarian law be observed, that the obligation to protect the civilian population be respected, and that collective punishment, the indiscriminate use of force, and the forced displacement of the population be prohibited.
Pope Leo XIV launches an appeal to the international community to provide humanitarian aid for the suffering people in war-ravaged Sudan, and asks for prayers for those affected by devastating mudslides in the country’s Darfur region.
This week, Pope Leo XIV will officially inaugurate much of the Castel Gandolfo property as the Borgo Laudato si’ ecology project. The 135-acre initiative will now offer, in various languages, an hour’s guided tour of the gardens, farmland, Laudato si’ educational centre, restaurant and marketplace to international tourists and visitors.

The United States has vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages. This action marks Washington’s sixth such veto since the start of the conflict. U.S. Deputy Middle East Envoy Morgan Ortagus said the draft failed to sufficiently condemn Hamas and did not affirm Israel’s right to self-defence. The resolution, backed by all 14 other council members, described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as “catastrophic” and urged Israel to lift restrictions on aid deliveries.

Joining students of Pontifical Universities on Monday, as part of the Jubilee of the World of Education, Pope Leo XIV signed an Apostolic Letter, written to commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of “Gravissimum Educationis”, and to reflect on the current relevance of the Conciliar Declaration and on the challenges that education has to face today, in particular for Catholic schools and universities. The Letter will be made public on Tuesday, 28 October.
Pope Leo XIV presided at “Walking Together in Hope,” a celebration of 60 years of “Nostra aetate”, the Second Vatican Council’s Declaration on Interreligious Dialogue. “Sixty years ago”, with the publication of Nostra aetate, “a seed of hope for interreligious dialogue was planted,” -Pope Leo XIV said- “Today, your presence bears witness that this seed has grown into a mighty tree, its branches reaching far and wide, offering shelter and bearing the rich fruits of understanding, friendship, cooperation and peace.”
